OFSTED inspected St Augustine’s School in April 2012, and found that:

In Year 11 English lessons, “pupils showed an excellent insight into the effectiveness of an author’s use of symbols to evoke key messages to the reader, immersed in independent discussion with one another, and were spurred on by skillful questioning by the teacher.  Support provided by adults from the minority ethnic achievement hub is effective in helping to involve pupils with English as an additional language in their learning”.

The performance formed part of the GCSE Drama practical assessment which is worth 60% of the overall GCSE. ‘The Crucible’ was a challenging piece to do and is usually studied for A-level rather than GSCE. The students did extremely well to perform such a substantial play, to such a high quality. Well done to all involved.

Year 7 Drama students were treated to a visit from someone very special this week when Scarborough’s resident magician Magic Mike came to lead a puppetry workshop. Magic Mike brought with him some favourite characters from his stage show: Carlos, Oscar and of course Chuck. The year 7 students were taught how to use the puppets as well as how to create storylines and characters. Everyone had a fantastic time and can’t wait to continue working on their own puppet characters. Big thanks go to Magic Mike, we are looking forward to your next visit already.
