The Stephen Joseph Theatre is looking for young people to create a new, youth-focused board where they can have their say on and contribute to the cultural life of Scarborough.

The SJT Young People’s Board is a new initiative, open to anyone aged between 16 to 25 years who is interested in playing a strategic role in the future of the Stephen Joseph Theatre as it looks to build a diverse group of advocates with experience of theatre and the wider community.

Chief Executive Mathew Russell said: “Stephen Joseph Theatre plays an important part in Scarborough’s cultural sector and we want to make sure that the stage is set for the theatre to go from strength to strength over the coming years. We believe a youth board is crucial to making sure all voices are heard.

“We are seeking young people who share our commitment to making thrilling theatre and developing meaningful and relevant outreach activity, young people who can bring energy, drive, enthusiasm and leadership. If you’d like to be part of the next stage in the SJT’s journey, we want to hear from you.”

There are 10 positions available on the SJT Young People’s Board which will meet four times a year, two weeks prior to the organisation’s main board meeting, on a Tuesday from 6-7.30pm. Members will be required to commit to a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years’ membership and to attend cultivation events as required.

Two members will also become Joint Chairs of the youth board, for two years minimum, and will be asked to attend the theatre’s main board meetings which take place four times a year on a Friday evening from 5.45-7.30pm.

Successful applicants will develop a range of personal skills in an artistic and fun environment, learning from the inside of a cultural organisation in the local community and contributing to the cultural life of the town.

There will also be the opportunity to attend various shows presented at the theatre and members will receive complimentary tickets for press nights.

To apply, send a CV and covering letter up to two sides of A4 each, explaining why you are interested in becoming a member and what you could contribute, to cheryl.govan@sjt.uk.com or by post to Cheryl Govan, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Westborough, YO11 1JW no later than Monday 4 January, 2016. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place in the week commencing 11 January, 2016.
