Last term Year 9 students working in English entered The Portico Sadie Massey Awards for Young Readers and Writers. This is a competition open to KS3 students across the north of England sponsored by The Portico Library in Manchester.

Book reviews beginning ‘This book changed my life…’ were submitted by Year 9 students across the cohort. The independent judges were delighted to inform the school that two students were to be recognised.

Among more than 600 entries, Tamara Lino’s review of Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon ‘really stood out from the crowd’. Tamara receives a Special Commendation.

What is more, Jacob Oliver’s review of The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness is selected as the overall winner in his category.

Tamara and Jacob receive a certificate and a copy of Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome, a book of exciting short stories centred around the history of The Portico Library. In addition, Jacob’s book review is published in this august tome. He also receives a book token and a free workshop for St. Augustine’s School.

The English department is immensely proud of Tamara and Jacob’s achievement. It is testament to the excellent standard of writing produced by our young writers throughout the academic year. Long may it continue.
