With both teams already having secured a place in the district finals this match was an opportunity to gain some valuable minutes on court in preparation for the inevitably tough task of facing the always impressive Ryedale in a few weeks’ time.

The Year 11 team have been incredibly well drilled by Mr Jones and the work they have done with him was clear to see; effective screening, combination play and movement off the ball regularly created space and scoring opportunities, and the well-structured defensive work ensured Scalby’s opportunities were limited.

Having said all that Year 11 started sluggishly and took the majority of the first quarter to find their rhythm, before Rocco Henry began to control the game from deep, being at the heart of everything positive. Viwin James split two defenders for a neat lay-up on the buzzer to end the quarter 8-6 to Scalby.

St. Augustine’s started the second quarter with much great impetus, driving at the key with sharper passing and much more purpose. A neat Maverick Bonificio steal set up an early basket for Alex Swales, and John Nuneza and Elliot Fenwick combined well to create numerous scoring opportunities, with Elliot duly obliging for a couple of baskets to give Year 11 an 18-14 half-time lead.

The second half of the match saw St. Augustine’s take control, with Scalby having no answer to their screening and direct dribbling. Caden Jones earned a couple of deserved baskets, with Rocco Henry, once again, pulling all the strings, including a huge ‘rejection’ from a Scalby player’s lay-up. Luca Cole regularly kept getting ‘in the paint’ and was unfortunate not to come away with a score. 26-20 the St. Augustine’s lead at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth and final quarter saw Reuban Randall dominate with some outstanding rebounding, both on offense and defence, with Fenwick and Nuneza again combining well. Bonificio scored and audacious reverse lay-up and Alex Swales’ aggressive defence constantly thwarted waves of Scalby attack, and it was Swales who sealed the victory with a buzzer-beating basket to leave the final score St. Augustine’s 37 – 25 Scalby.

The boys played superbly and the game was a joy to watch, please congratulate them if you see them.
