Having progressed to the District finals by winning the Scarborough Schools’ tournament, Year 7 travelled to Ryedale School on Thursday evening.

Their first match, a semi-final encounter with Malton, got off to a good start with Akeel Miah netting an early basket. However, Malton soon got a foothold in the match and began to dominate, quickly accumulating points with several good baskets. The impressive Rocco Gill pulled a score back for St. Augustine’s but Malton held a commanding 16-4 half-time lead.

The second-half was a much closer affair, in every sense, as the game became increasingly physical. Oli Walters impressed with his dribbling and scored a neat lay-up after one dribble that took him past three defenders. Shortly after he repeated the trick after winning a turnover high up the court, and the confident Alex Millington was unlucky not to score as he went close on numerous occasions. However, Malton’s quick passing proved too much to deal with and they ran out deserved 25-8 victors.

This meant that Year 7 would now face Scalby in the 3rd/4th place play-off. This game was a much more competitive encounter with baskets and points hard to come by. Ksean Francis starred in the first-half, score an excellent long-range basket, and going close on another couple of occasions, as he kept finding space to shoot.

With the half-time score 2-0 to St. Augustine’s, Year 7 looked well placed to finish the competition in third place. A Harry Sheader basket, after some excellent work from Charlie Sheader, doubled St. Augustine’s lead, 4-0. Charlie Sheader was proving to be a thorn in the side for Scalby with his neat passing and excellent rebounding controlling the game. However, to their credit Scalby kept coming and were rewarded with two late baskets to level the game 4-4, which is how it stayed until the final hooter. Both teams sharing third place – a fare result.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed their basketball and behaved impeccably, so much so that our bus driver even complimented them on their behaviour! Well done Year 7.
