Year 7 lost their Scarborough and District Cup match to George Pindar in agonising fashion, going out on penalties after a thrilling match finished 3-3 after extra-time.

St. Augustine’s took an early lead when the hard-working Tom Kelly made a goal for himself out of nothing. Pressuring the Pindar midfield, he won the ball on the half way line, before beating a defender to ball, then went on to coolly round the on-rushing goalkeeper and calmly stroke the ball into the empty net. Pindar were a step up in class from Year 7’s previous opposition and they battled hard and showed some real skill to draw level and then take a 2-1 lead into half-time.

The second half kicked off and the match continued in the same vein as the first – fast and frenetic, with the play now stretching end to end. Goalkeeper Harry Sheader, who was outstanding throughout, produced some incredible saves, including one in the top corner from a thunderous free-kick, that was destined for the goal. Captain, Milan Kapczynski hit a great free-kick of his own that was superbly tipped around the post by the Pindar goalkeeper. At the back, man-of-the-match, Bobby Shanks was utterly dominant, repelling numerous attacks and setting up several others as he carried or played the ball out of defence down the right. And up front, Rocco Gill worked tirelessly for scant reward.

With time running out to find an equaliser George Bond popped up to level the match at 2-2 and send the game into extra-time. Shortly after the restart a long-range Pindar strike found its way through the mire to squeeze in at the corner and put Pindar in control 3-2. Despite the bitter body-blow of losing a goal in extra-time, Year 7 showed incredible grit and determination, and refused to let their heads drop. And it was that determination, epitomised by Tom Kelly, who was struggling with an injury, who created the opportunity down the right flank, crossing to Oli Walters who smashed home the thrilling equaliser and setting up the nail-biting finale of penalties.

Harry Sheader produced a number of brilliant saves during the shootout, but with a couple of St. Augustine’s penalties hitting the woodwork and another two being saved, the Year 7s just fell short, losing 2-1.

It was an enthralling match and each and every one of the boys should be proud of their efforts.
